WordPress has a huge community which would become useful while you face any issues. You can find solutions for most problem you may face.

Moreover, you will get lots of free themes and plugins. So, I recommend WordPress over Joomla.

If your problem the same with blog, news then Wordpress is the best choice.
Opposite for more complex system.

Today is much better wordpress, at least it does not delete the web if you do not use it in 30 days as a joomla. It is also more intuitive. I know this post is old, but today wordpress.org is one of the best web platforms and if you want a free website, with wordpress.com you can make it very beautiful.
